These look pretty interesting. Judging by the screenshots they remind me of Myst. I'll have to check them out.

Overall, I like playing the Rhem games over Myst. While Myst had better graphics --- the problem I had with Myst was there was often too much text, because it got over-involved with the 'story-line'. If I was interested in a 'story', I'd just read a book. Rhem has a minimal story line (mostly just a beginning and an end to provide a framework and the rest is just all 'puzzle' which I prefer. The puzzles in Rhem are very challenging most of the time --- you really need to take notes (which I don't mind doing --- I fend the better notes you take, the better chances you'll have of figuring things out later. I recommend having fraph paper and different colored pencils available!) To be fair, the Myst series did have some good pulles and the graphics in Rhem aren't all that bad either (I guess it depends on your expectations - i.e. what you're accustomed to). I've played all 4 Rhem games and am very much looking forward to Rhem 5. I played Rhem 2 last and was able to get through the whole game without looking up any 'hints' ( which I did on the other 3 --- and sometimes regretted it afterwards - because I should have been able to figure them out on my own - so by the time I played Rhem 2, I was 'wise' to look for certain thngs --- or to try different things --- you have to play around quite a bit --- don't assume anything!). Hope Rhem continues beyond 5 as well ---- but it must take a LOT of work to set all that stuff up!! I give Knut Mueller a lot of credit for doing so so well. Cheers!

The Rhem games are great. Can you recommend any other Myst-like games? (With that I mean non-violent, non-linear adventures that require lots of thinking).

There are quite a few, maybe not all non-linear, you can browse the Mobygames.com database, you can choose your keywords, adventure, 1st person fmv and such. Good luck!

of course I played Reah!. I played it all... at least the most difficult ones. Myst series, Rhem, Obsidian, Morpheus, Lightbringer... I played ASA too. Everyone. But the entire category (first person, point and click, non-inventory-based puzzles) is dying... Our main hope is the great german guy, Knut Muller. 3/9/2013 17:25:13
Thanks for bringing up ASA - A Space Adventure Struzzo, I will check it out and maybe post a separate blog for it.

Yes goat, Knut is our main hope!!! Once he wrote that after the last Rhem he would go on creating Rhem-like games... let's keep all our fingers crossed.

I do not think the genre is dying out, Myst has been ported to all platform possible, which I think keeps the spirit alive of these games. There are always people inspired enough to undertake making their own adventures. In this blog I hope to give them all a bit more attention than they get in the mainstream 'media'.

Yes, Horror Games, especially the Psychological ones are also my favourite, with Darkness Within on Top. Part 2 I found less intriguing, but still decent. Strange you cannot manage a keyboard. I remember using it for the first time (now 20 years ago) and experienced it as awkward, but after some practice it becomes easier. Also check out my blog on Silent Hill on the PC, which you can play on your PC using a controller. Another classic Suspense 1st person is Shivers, which I happen to auction this week. Please check the AVAILABLE section.

@ goat, I'm afraid even Haven Moon is too much for my 2.33 Ghz processor, sigh. I was able to play The Witness adding a 4 Gb RAM card, but for a more powerful CPU I have to change the whole machine. Thanks anyway!

You couldn't believe that the first videogame I played, in 1994, was Alone in the Dark 1! I played it on DOS and it was keyboard or nothing. But I was fascinated by the theme, centered on Lovecraft, one of my favorite writers, and by the fact that it was my very first experience in gaming... I could hardly believe to my eyes!

What a coincidence, I just ordered The Filmmaker from the USA, look forward to playing that. Most of the others you mentioned I played, including Escape from the Haunted House, which also had a dreadful end puzzle involving setting a clock. But considering how many titles are still out there, we do still have quite some choice, no?

You guys may want to look in to the Escape Games genre. For example, games at EscapeGames24.com. This may satisfy your needs if you are in to Rhem, purely for the puzzle aspects. Submachine is a very famous one that is very good and similar to Rhem.

Enjoyed Quern a lot. It's a large game and a view tough puzzles there. Not as challeging as Rhem but still very nice. I don't know what to do with these special edition games. I know all the answers to the old Rhem games because I've played them more then once over the decade. so I don't wanna be bothered with going through them once more only to access a few new puzzles. I'm basically waiting desperatly for Rhem 5. Come on Knut. Don'tmake us wait any longer.
struzzo
26/6/2017 05:53:47
Yes! Definitely there will be a Rhem V! Knut is working on the Special Editions of the first four chapters, containing extensions leading to the discover of the star-key that will open all doors between the areas. At the moment Rhem IV and Rhem I SE have already been released (see Rhem website) and Rhem II SE is almost ready for the release. After the only one left, Rhem III, Rhem V will come!

@ goat, you are right! That final is utterly cool, but can you really call it an ending? You can access it before completing the whole game, and there's another ending before that (but, depending on the panels you solve first, you could see them in the reverse order).

love poetry, but i´m not good in english.so i dont care very much about the stories of the games. I´m from Buenos Aires. And LOVE challenging puzzles. For me the most difficult so far was Schizm, followed by Rhem, I guess.

@ goat, Catyph's poetry is mainly in its graphics! Simon creates enchanting environments. I often have difficulty in understanding English speech in games too; I'm from Rome.
